One of Beverley Minster's
many narrow spiral staircases. Until relatively recently
there was no lighting on the
staircases and staff would have to use a candle for illumination.
If the candle blew out they'd
be left completely in the dark.

Steve Rial,
a maintenance worker and plumber at the minster,
stands inside a giant treadwheel
in the minster's
roof space. Steve walks inside the wooden wheel which can be used to raise
bulky items from the minster floor to the roof.

Verger John Dell indicates
the height of the ceiling, which means that to change a light bulb
he has to wear abseiling gear.
